Move to Australia as a GP

Visa options

Most overseas doctors begin their journey to Australia on the Skills in Demand visa (482), then move to one of three permanent-residency pathways. Here's how each one works.

The Skills in Demand visa (SC482)

The most common visa for medical practitioners moving to Australia. It lets you start working here while you pursue the permanent visa options for doctors.

Temporary · your first visa

What the 482 asks of you

Your sponsoring practice backs the visa as part of your placement, and you work primarily for them while it's active.

  • AHPRA registration: you'll need your medical registration in place first
  • Employer sponsorship: work primarily for the practice that sponsors you
There is no age limit for this visa.

Permanent residency

Three pathways to staying for good

GPs immigrating to Australia typically reach permanent residency one of three ways.

SC186 · Transitional stream (TRT)

482 → 186 after time in role

  • Work at least 2–3 years on a 482 visa
  • Be employed full-time as a General Practitioner in the same occupation

No age limit for GPs. Doctors moving from the 482 to the 186 on this stream aren't subject to an age cap.

SC186 · Direct Entry

Straight to PR, no prior 482

  • AHPRA registration (or eligibility)
  • At least 3 years of relevant post-qualification experience
  • Employer nomination for the General Practitioner role, full-time

Age limit 45. Very few practices sponsor for this visa.

Timing: you can only apply after obtaining Specialist AHPRA registration, which typically takes around 6 months.

SC189 · Skilled Independent

Points-tested, no sponsor needed

  • Score at least 65 points on the skilled-migration points test
  • Be under 45 at the time of invitation
  • Work in Australia for 1 year
  • Lodge an Expression of Interest and receive an invitation

Worth knowing: invitation timing is uncertain and highly competitive.

You're not doing this alone

Sponsorship comes with the placement

When GP Link places you, employer-backed visa sponsorship is arranged as part of the role, and your visa steps are tracked in the GP Link app right alongside your AHPRA registration, so you always know what's next.
